Federal Government Launches Investigation into Koton Karfe Correctional Centre Escape

In a proactive response to a recent security breach, the Federal Government has initiated an investigation into the escape of inmates from the Koton Karfe Correctional Centre in Kogi State. This move was announced by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who expressed deep concern over the incident.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo characterized the prison break as "unfortunate" and underscored the government’s commitment to recapturing all escapees. He indicated that authorities would utilize the robust biometric systems implemented by the Nigerian Correctional Service to aid in the search and return of the fleeing individuals.

In a statement delivered by his media aide, Alao Babatunde, the Minister instructed Sylvester Ndidi, the Acting Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), to promptly assess the facility to determine the precise circumstances surrounding the escape. “We are on top of the situation. Our men are on the ground in Kogi, and I have ordered a comprehensive audit to uncover the events that led to this incident,” he affirmed.

This investigation marks a critical step in addressing the severe issues of security and management within Nigeria's correctional facilities, aiming to prevent future occurrences and enhance public safety.
